傅可恩 : 我的改變

Five years ago I was in a very bad place. I wasn’t sleeping and it hurt to walk. I was even using a cane at one point! I also was putting on an unhealthy amount of weight and my blood pressure and cholesterol were too high. So, four years ago I started going to the gym and working with a personal trainer. Although I’d always been active (walking, yoga, martial arts … ) I’d never regularly gone to the gym before and I thought I’d hate it, but I actually ended up loving it.

What do I like about it? Three things: First, a sense of regular but steady improvement. Second, what it can teach you about your body. And, third, the fact that our body is much more adaptable than I ever thought possible. This picture illustrates this third point. I used to think that to improve my posture I had to constantly “stand up straight” and “throw my shoulders back.” Nothing could be further from the truth. In the second picture (the one with correct posture) I am completely relaxed. My shoulders are no longer rounded forward when I’m in a resting position because muscular imbalances aren’t pulling them out of place, not because I’m pushing them back.

I owe a lot of this to Gary, 邱奕鈞, who is the most thoughtful and hard working trainer anyone could hope to have, as well Ryan at 明水物理治療所 Meetsweet Physical Therapy whom he recommended. (And to Erin Hale who introduced me to Gary in the first place.)
