It’s another week and another record for Grant Holloway.
Two weeks after setting the American record in the 60-meter hurdles and a week after setting a meet record in Torun, Poland, Holloway, a former star athlete for Grassfield High in Chesapeake, broke a 27-year-old world record in the 60-meter hurdles by .01 of a second with a time of 7.29 seconds Wednesday in Madrid, Spain.
“It’s Amazing,” Holloway said in a text message. “Continuing to prove people wrong and making people smile in the process. Major thanks to my family, coaches, stellar athletics and my dream team staff. Couldn’t have done it without them.
“Next goal is Olympics trials. Happy but never satisfied. ”
Holloway, who is also the world champion in the 110-meter hurdles, broke Colin Jackson’s record, which was set in 1994.
Holloway’s father Stan Holloway, was proud of his son.
“Very proud as a dad and as a coach,” Stan said in a text. “Our motto this year is ‘Hold Me Accountable.’ He truly understand every aspect of that motto and we as a family and as village will respect those profound words.”
According to nbscports.com, Holloway’s initial time was recorded as 7.32. About a minute later, the official time came in as 7.29 and “world record” was flashed on a stadium scoreboard. Holloway began posing with a “world record” sign.
Holloway was a football and track star for Grassfield before focusing on track at the University of Florida. With the Gators, he established a school record with eight career individual national titles, including three straight 110-meter hurdles crowns. In 2019, he won the prestigious Bowerman Award — given to the year’s best student-athlete in American collegiate track and field.
Holloway signed with Adidas and turned pro after his 2019 season at Florida.
